Petit_chen

A Franco-German dance production with Compagnie Tatoo

Premiere: February 25, 2027 at Theater Bremen

Who decides what we are capable of? What happens when others expect less of us than we do of ourselves? And how can we break free from such external attributions?

In “Petit_chen,” we explore these questions together with the French company Compagnie Tatoo. Dancers with and without disabilities bring their experiences, movement ideas, and perspectives into a new stage production. At the heart of the work is the tension between the image that others have of us and our own self-image.

People with learning difficulties, in particular, frequently experience not being taken seriously as adults or having others make decisions over their heads. “Petit_chen” takes up these experiences and translates them into dance. With humor, surprising role reversals, and the playful exaggeration of everyday situations, we question preconceived notions of performance, power, and self-determination.

The participating dancers shape the artistic process collectively: their diverse modes of expression define the choreography. The result is a piece that invites audiences to examine familiar perspectives and perceive people anew through their abilities and desires.

The project kicks off with a residency in Paris in October 2026. This first joint working phase provides space for getting to know each other, experimenting, and developing initial scenes. Further rehearsal phases in Germany and France will continue the collaboration through 2027.

The project is supported by the Fonds Darstellende Künste, the Senator for Culture Bremen, the Karin and Uwe Hollweg Foundation, and Fonds Transfabrik.
